Palliative Care FAQs

Honest, compassionate answers to the questions families most often ask about SwiftNurse palliative care.

What exactly is palliative care and when should we consider it? +
Palliative care is specialist care focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness, with the primary goal being to improve quality of life. It can begin at any stage of illness โ€” not just at the very end of life โ€” and can be received alongside curative treatment. SwiftNurse recommends considering palliative care as soon as a serious, life-limiting diagnosis is made.
Does choosing palliative care mean giving up on treatment? +
Not at all. Palliative care can โ€” and often does โ€” run alongside curative or disease-modifying treatments. It is not about giving up; it is about living as well as possible. SwiftNurse palliative care focuses on comfort, dignity and quality of life โ€” whatever stage of illness the patient is at.
Can my loved one really stay at home rather than going to a hospice? +
Yes โ€” and for many patients, being at home is their strongest wish. Studies consistently show that most people prefer to die at home, in familiar surroundings with loved ones. SwiftNurse specialises in delivering hospice-quality palliative care in the home environment. With the right support, the vast majority of patients can remain at home safely and comfortably.
How do SwiftNurse nurses manage pain at home? +
SwiftNurse palliative nurses are trained in advanced pain and symptom management. We work closely with your patient's GP, consultant and palliative medicine team to ensure the correct medications and doses are prescribed and administered safely. We monitor pain levels continuously, adjust medication regimens as needed and can access out-of-hours prescribing support at any time.
What support does SwiftNurse offer families after bereavement? +
SwiftNurse's care does not end at the moment of death. We provide bereavement support visits, grief counselling referrals and practical guidance on what to do after a death. Our bereavement counsellor Grace is available to family members for up to 12 months following loss. We believe supporting families through grief is as important as the care we provided before it.
Is palliative home care funded by the NHS? +
NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funding may be available for patients with complex palliative care needs. The Fast Track CHC pathway can be activated quickly for patients approaching end of life, enabling funded home palliative care. SwiftNurse has a dedicated funding support specialist who can guide your family through the CHC application process, as well as charitable funding options.
